Should iPad Pro replace your computer?

Apple recently posted a video of “5 reasons why iPad Pro could be your next computer”. Here are summarised list:

1. Its more powerful than most computer.
2. Its an all-in-one – scanner, camera, notepad, cinema, editing suite, music studio, book, and a computer.
3. Its portable, and goes anywhere with LTE connectivity.
4. Its simple, and easy to use.
5. It blends well with the new Apple Pencil.

Recent benchmarks from 9to5mac shows that new iPad Pros models outperform Macbook Pro in multitasking and GPU tasks. These devices are capable to surpass 13″ Retina Macbook Pro 2016 with roughly 15% and 10%, respectively. The extra power are also proven to be much “more efficient” in the ongoing iPad Pros lineup on the October Apple Event where Adobe and Apple demoed Adobe Photoshop CC. that will be released soon in iOS, exclusive for iPad.

Scanner is a feature in iOS 12, by the help of the 12 megapixels camera. Whereas the Apple A12X Bionic chip will handle the other intensive tasks such as movie editing, and gaming. Portability is not an issue for an iPad. With only 5.9 mm thin, and weighs at 468 g makes it the lightest tablet in the class. LTE connectivity with Gigabit-class LTE is optional for iPad Pro. Apple has been one of the best-in-the-class in terms of LCD display panels, where they design exceptionally sharp, bright, and colour accurate panels. Its technology; P3 colour gamut, and True Tone display, are packed onto the devices.

Comes with iOS 12, performance is superbly snappy. Compared with the 2017 iPad Pros that had iOS 11 preinstalled, the speed differences is noticeable. iOS 12 comes with a more refined experiences, and more gestures for users to play with to aid user multitask. Without the home button and Touch ID, Apple has instead replaced it with a simple gesture by swiping up from the bottom of the screen to leave the application similar to that of iPhone X. Since iOS 11, Apple has revamped the Dock, which is now similar to Dock in Macbooks.

Portability is nothing without a good battery life. iPad Pros 29.45 Wh, and 36.71 Wh battery capacity for both sizes managed to achieve 10 hours of battery life of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music.

Apple Pencil costs $129 serves a convenient purpose in terms of notetaking, drawing, and colouring on the builtin Notes application. It is now able to switch tools with a “double tap”  on the lower side of the Apple Pencil. For those user who happen to write, and uses their iPads regularly for typing could benefit themselves by purchasing Smart Keyboard Folio for both 11-inch Pros and 12.-inch, $179, and $199 respectively.

However, due to the limitations of cross-platform integration between iOS, and macOS, and the lackluster features of iOS 12 compared to macOS Mojave, users haven’t been able to switch fully to this lightweight beast. This summarises even further that the iPad Pros, for now at least, are targeted for for younger audiences, and for those people who uses their computers for basic application. Whereas, MacBook Pro users are aimed for those tech savvy, and heavy-load user. Sure, iPad Pro definitely is a computer, but it’s not a computer for everyone, yet.
